Meditation is a practice that can vary in different traditions and approaches, but here are some general guidelines to help you get started with a basic meditation practice:
- Find a quiet and comfortable space: Choose a quiet environment where you can sit comfortably without distractions. You may want to sit on a cushion, a chair, or even lie down, depending on your preference and physical comfort.
- Adopt a relaxed posture: Sit with your back straight but not rigid, allowing your body to be relaxed and at ease. You can close your eyes or keep them slightly open with a soft gaze, whichever feels more comfortable for you.
- Focus on your breath: Take a few deep breaths to settle into the present moment. Then, let your breath return to its natural rhythm. Direct your attention to the sensation of your breath entering and leaving your body. Notice the rise and fall of your abdomen or the feeling of air passing through your nostrils. Use your breath as an anchor to keep your mind focused.
- Cultivate non-judgmental awareness: As thoughts, emotions, or physical sensations arise, simply observe them without judgment or attachment. Notice their presence, but avoid getting caught up in them or following them down a train of thought. Acknowledge them and gently bring your attention back to your breath.
- Start with short sessions: When starting out, it can be helpful to begin with shorter meditation sessions, such as 5 or 10 minutes, and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable and experienced.
- Be patient and kind to yourself: Meditation is a skill that develops over time with regular practice. Be patient with yourself and don’t get discouraged if your mind wanders frequently. It’s natural for thoughts to arise; the key is to notice when your mind has wandered and gently bring your focus back to your breath.
- Consider guided meditations: If you find it challenging to meditate on your own, you can try guided meditations. These are recordings or apps that provide instructions and lead you through the meditation process, helping you stay focused and relaxed.
Right way to meditate
There’s no single “right” way to meditate. It’s a personal practice, and what matters most is finding a method that resonates with you and supports your overall well-being. Experiment with different techniques, explore various meditation styles, and adapt your practice according to your preferences and needs.
Reflection: Good start of the day
Do you meditate? If yes, why? It’s a hard question, isn’t it? For me, it’s all about starting my day with a positive and or clear mindset. You are not happy every day but so if it’s too far from the positive thought at least I try to figure out my thoughts and balance what I need to do for me to feel peace for the day.
Now some of you are thinking, but to meditate is to not think, and yes that’s correct I guess. But the first 10 minutes my head is spinning with the thoughts I need to settle, and then the real meditation starts.
